Thoughts on being a bookseller:

"owning and operating a bookstore has NEVER been an easy way to make a living. But booksellers are an obstinate and romantic lot. From their corps arise, from time to time, people with enough business sense to actually support their Quixotic dreams. Serendipity and Borders have closed, but independent bookstores like them will always be around." -- Dan Gregory [Between the Covers Rare Books, Gloucester City, N.J]

Quote of the Day!

For what it's worth: it's never too late to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.

Books/Reading Quote of the Day:

Even when reading is impossible, the presence of books acquired produces such an ecstasy that the buying of more books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching towards infinity. We cherish books even if unread, their mere presence exudes comfort, their ready access reassurance.

A visit to Papa Hemingway

In August we took a day trip to Ketchum and Sun Valley, Idaho. While there we took time to visit Hemingway's gravesite and the Memorial (located a few miles away). The memorial overlooks what was once one of his favorite flyfishing streams.

It says:

Best of all he loved the fall...The leaves yellow on the cottonwoods, leaves floating on the trout streams and above the hills the high blue windless skies...Now he will be part of them forever.

Garage sale find of last weekend: a Vintage Dresser

We bought this dresser at a sale near our neighborhood on Friday for $35. I believe this is from the 40s. Nice dovetail drawers, decorative faced top drawer and on legs. Best part: no water rings on the top! :-)

Picture #1 is as purchased, #2 after I cleaned and lemon-oiled the wood. I still need to remove the brass pulls and shine them up - it will be even nicer when done. She will be moving upstairs to my bedroom shortly.

I love finding a good deal... What have you found lately? Please share!

Book: The Art of Tying the Wet Fly and Fishing the Flymph- James Leisenring

An uncommon flyfishing title for you anglers:

The Art of Tying the Wet Fly and Fishing the Flymph - James Leisenring, written by Vernon S. Hidy. This second printing was released in 1972 by Crown Publishers. First published in 1941. Hard cover, blue cloth, silver stamped titles. Small 8vo, 5-1/4" x 7-1/2", 160 pages with index. Illustrated with photographs.

Ernest Schwiebert wrote the introduction to this edition. He also wrote "Our myopic preoccupation with the dry-fly method, through reverence for Gordon and LaBranch, has resulted in such an oversight. American anglers have largely forgotten James Leisenring in following the more glamorous heroes of American fly-fishing, but it was Leisenring who quitely adapted the wet-fly tactics of Stewart and Skues to the fly hatches of American Waters

Chapters are devoted to the details of his method of tying winged wets and nymphs, accompanied by clear pen and ink illustrations and followed by a chapter detailing his favorite fly patterns. Dustjacket has some closed tears @ edges and is not price-clipped; a tight, clean copy with no markings!

The Best Illustrations from 130 Years of The Brothers Grimm « Flavorwire

I will be adding this one to my wish list!

Few things from our childhood are as culturally universal as fairy tales, particularly those collected by the Brothers Grimm. These stories — CinderellaSnow WhiteSleeping BeautyHansel and GretelRapunzelPuss 'n Boots, and many more — have been reinterpreted and retranslated over and over around the world. An integral part of the experience and enjoyment of stories like these is the imagery, of course. After all, often some of our first experiences with stories comes from looking at illustrations while the text is read aloud. In what we think is a fairly brilliant move, Taschen's Noel Daniel has created a new compendium of some of the most well-loved Grimm fairy tales, each accompanied by the best vintage illustrations he could find, culled from the hundreds of adaptations, translations and reissues of the stories from the 1820s through the 1950s. In addition, the book's layout is accented by lovely original silhouettes from the 1870s interwoven with new silhouette designs created specifically for this publication. The only downside is that the collection doesn't come out until September, but click through for some images of the stunning illustrations to whet your appetite, and we're pretty sure you'll be pre-ordering your copy on the quick.

The Caedmon Poetry Collection: A Century of Poets Reading Their Work [Set of 3 CDs]

This provides a choice gathering of some of the twentieth century's greatest poetry read by the century's greatest poets!

A reawakened love for the sound of poetry has made modern poems subtly different from the poems of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We have only to listen to these poets reading their own works to know how important their interpretations are to a full comprehension of their poems. The ministerial intonations of Eliot, the passionate orchestrations of Thomas, the very very precise formulations of Cummings, the easy conversational inflection of Frost are integral, lending subtle clarifications which go beyond the printed page.

The fact that this recording includes the voice of Yeats is something of a miracle. In the early 1930's, when the thought of recording poets occurred to few, Yeats himself made several recordings for radio broadcast. By sheer luck, an unmutilated copy was preserved; and now the rich and melodious voice can be heard by a new generation.
