Psychedelic Prayers: And Other Meditations by Timothy Leary

Leary's Psychedelic Prayers

Psychedelic Prayers: And Other Meditations
by Timothy Leary

1966. New Hyde Park, NY: University Books. First edition, this publisher. Psychedelic Monograph II. Condition: Very Good- as there's some minor soil from handling, there is a tear which originates at the spine about 1 1/2" up from the bottom, moving into lower area of front cover (not to the edge). Adjacent wrinkled area on back cover. Original printed wrappers, bright yellow-orange covers with cover psychedelic illustration - red horse motif by Michael Bowen [note: there are small dot-black eyes in the eye sockets, not sure if it was printed as such or added later].

Timothy Leary's only book of poetry and meditations. Written while Timothy Leary was visiting India in 1965 and finished at his celebrated commune in Millbrook, New York, the following year, Psychedelic Prayers is an adaptation of Book I of the Tao Te Ching. Leary said he was drawn to the "psychedelic" quality of the ancient work and believed it could be a guide to transcendental experiences. "My objective", he later wrote, "was to find this seed idea in each sutra and rewrite it in the lingua franca of psychedelia". He succeeded in his aim: Psychedelic Prayers occupies a unique place in 1960s literature and is one of Leary's most beloved books.

The Mountain of Gold with Signed Letter

Signed half-title page by Max Evans

[Illustrated by Hugh Cabot, III] 1965. Sellenraa, Dunwoody, Georgia: Norman S. Berg, Publisher. First Edition - SIGNED presentation copy (signed on half-title page). 8vo. 77pp. Book in very good condition with a Good+ condition dustjacket, please note there are some chips along the upper edge near front right corner, one circular missing spot (small) at upper spine, in general some shelfwear and scuffs to paper cover. Both corners at front flap of dustjacket are clipped - having read other catalogs, I see this may have been from the publisher(?) as they also note this condition, there is a light 2.95 price written where the flap corner should be.

In addition to the signed book there is a personal letter (in envelope) dated Aug 1966 handwritten in orange pen by Mr. Evans - letter was to Jean Williams in Hollywood. Stationary is from the El Rey Motel in  "old Santa Fe, New Mexico"

Please read this very interesting article about Max Evans: "Today, he's best-known as a writer, author of The Rounders and The Hi Lo Country (both turned into critically acclaimed movies), the irascible rapscallion who once broke director Sam Peckinpah's ankle — "I was trying to break his neck." — winner of multiple Spur Awards, multiple Western Heritage Wrangler Awards and the 1990 Levi Strauss Saddleman Award for lifetime achievement in Western literature." -- Johnny D. Boggs

This is the story of Benito Anaya and his wife Eloisa.... while cutting trees on Black Mountain for corral posts, Benito stumbles upon a rock, it is a huge nugget of gold, the size of his fist. The rest of his life is spent in a search for the mother lode. [A true allegory of loss of vision in pursuit of a goal.]

Books by respected Cooking / Gastronomy author M.F.K. Fisher

[book #1 SOLD] Sister Age & Serve it Forth by MFK Fisher - available

Sister Age by M.F.K. Fisher - 1983. NY: Alfred A. Knopf. Good+ / Good + Dustjacket. 1st Edition. 243 pages. "M.F.K. Fisher's unusual literary life has been devoted to elevating two inescapable processes, eating and aging, from the realm of necessity (and of neurosis) to the status of art. She is best known as a 'philosopher of food,'as Clifton Fadiman called her in his introduction to a collection of her gastronomical writings, The Art of Eating [1954]...Seventy-five this year, she has now published fifteen excellent short stories. . . . Some of the stories are in fact memoirs... Other stories dip into fantasy...The most ambitious, and also the most successful and moving, story in the collection, 'Another Love Story,' masterfully blends memory and fantasy. M.F.K. Fisher's imagination is expansive. Her memory is round and deep." --From Ann Hulbert [The New Republic].

In these fifteen remarkable stories, M.F.K. Fisher, one of the most admired writers of our time, embraces age as St. Francis welcomed Brother Pain. With a saint to guide us, she writes in her Foreword, perhaps we can accept in a loving way "the inevitable visits of a possibly nagging harpy like Sister Age" But in the stories, it is the human strength in the unavoidable encounter with the end of life that Mrs. Fisher dramatizes so powerfully. Other themes the importance of witnessing death, the marvelous resilience of the old, the passing of vanity are all explored with insight, sympathy and, often, a sly wit.

Bookseller Inventory #000342. Price: $15.

Serve it Forth by M.F.K. Fisher - 1989: North Point Press, San Francisco. Trade Paperback. Very Good condition.

In Serve It Forth, her first book, M. F. K. Fisher takes readers on an animated journey through culinary history, beginning with the honey-loving Greeks and the immoderate Romans. Fisher recalls a hunt for snails and truffles with one of the last adepts in that art and recounts how Catherine de Medici, lonely for home cooking, touched off a culinary revolution by bringing Italian chefs to France. Each essay makes clear the absolute firmness of Fisher's taste--contrarian and unique--and her skill at stirring memory and imagination into a potent brew. 146 pages.

"Explorations and Surveys for a Rail Road Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. War Department, Route near the 41st Parallels, Map No. 3 From the Humboldt Mountains to the Mud Lakes; from Explorations and Surveys made under the direction of the Hon. Jefferson Davis Secretary of War by Captain E. G. Beckwith, 3rd Artillery. F. W. Egloffstein Topographer for the Route 1855."

Washington: 1861. Good Condition.

Scale of 12 Miles to one inch or 1:760320. Folded flat and as removed from Volume XI - total size including margins (unfolded) 18 x 20.5 inches. Condition: there are creases where the map was folded to fit into the report volume, light browning along the folds, there is a dark spot of foxing on the left side of the map, also a few other dots of foxing on the map and in the margin area, toning at the outside edges.

In 1853, the U.S. Congress authorized the Corps of Topographic Engineers to undertake a survey of potential rail routes between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean. This print is an illustration from the report of the survey at the 41st parallel under the leadership of Lt. Edward G. Beckwith, in the region between the Green River Valley and the Sacramento River Valley, conducted in 1854. Beckwith's survey was a continuation of the the survey at the 38th and 39th parallels headed by Captain John Gunnison, which was terminated in October, 1853 after Gunnison, artist Richard Kern and others were killed by Indians along the Sevier River, in what is now Utah. The routes of the Survey Party are shown, including their campsites, which are indicated by date and topographical details of the mountains are provided. "The line explored in 1854 runs south of the Railroad Line which runs along the Humboldt River to the bend of the river south of which it veers off from the river, which continues south. It then proceeds generally westerly to the Valley of the Mud Lakes (the route of the Western Pacific) north of Pyramid Lake. This lake is the sink of the Salmon Trout (Truckee) River, and the courses of the Carson and the Walker Rivers are shown farther to the south. North of the line, and north of Mud Lake, is the Black Rock Canon, Black Rock Creek and Black Rock Point..This is one of the best maps that F.W. Egloffstein drew for Beckwith."-- Wheat's Mapping the Transmississippi West #823. Digital photos available.
